Familiar Places: Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana

Kokomo is the county seat of Howard County, Indiana. (1) On 01 January 2012 Kokomo annexed more than 7 square miles on the south and west sides of the city which included Alto and Indian Heights. (1) Kokomo was named after the Native American Ma-Ko-Ko-Mo (meaning Black Walnut) who was called "Chief Kokomo." (1) He was not a Chief though, he was one of four sons of Chief Richardville, the last of the Miamis Indian Chiefs. David Foster was known as the "Father of Kokomo" and claimed he named the city after the "orneriest Indian on earth" because Kokomo was "the orneriest town on earth." (1)

On 06 October 1886 they found natural gas in Kokomo. This caused an increasing number of industries to be interested in Kokomo, which resulted in many industrial and technical achievements. (1) Kokomo is considered a pioneer of automobile manufacturing in the U.S. with the first successful trial run of Elwood Haynes' "horseless carriage." The first push button car radio was developed at the Delco Radio Division in Kokomo. The Kemp Brothers Canning Co. developed the first canned tomato juice. The first mechanical corn picker was developed here. The first Ponderosa Steakhouse opened here. The first McDonalds with a diner inside was opened here. Other things that first happened in Kokomo was: the pneumatic rubber tire, aluminum casting, Kingston carburetor, Stellite cobalt-base alloy, stainless steel table ware, the Howitzer shell, aerial bomb with fins, Dirilyte golden-hued tableware, all-metal life boats and rafts, signal-seeking car radio, transistorized signal-seeking car (hybrid) radio, all transistor car radio. Here are the city limits as they were prior to the 2012 annex:

This was the closest I could find.  Home town locator has old boundaries shown on a current map.  I know this because as you can see I show the current boundaries above.  However the new 31 didn't go around the town and the old 31 relabeled 931 until 2013.  As you can see the annex allowed Kokomo to claim most of the new US 31 and the part of IN 26 that runs through the area.

As I go through my family tree I am sure I will have more to add to this page.  Many people in our family lives or lived in this area through out the ages.
