Virginia
Queen Elizabeth gave Sir Walter Raleigh permission to establish a colony in North America. Queen Elizabeth was often called the Virgin Queen. So in 1854 Sir Walter Raleigh established the first colony in North America and called it Virginia. (1) This contributes to it's nickname "Old Dominion." (3) This is the only nickname officially recognized. (3)
In 1624 King James made Virginia a royal Colony. (1)
When Virginia wrote their own constitution they established their self as a common wealth. A common wealth states that they will be governed by the people and not any king or queen. (1) Even though they call their self a common wealth the U.S. government treats Virginia as a state. The first president, George WASHINGTON and four other presidents: Thomas JEFFERSON, James MADISON, James MONROE, and John TYLER all came from Virginia. (1) This contributes to Virginia being called "Mother of Presidents" (3) The wiki article sited claims 8 presidents were born there.
During the English Civil War, supporters of King Charles II of England were called Cavaliers. This gave way to another unofficial nickname "The Cavalier State". The state dance is a square dance called the Virginia reel. In March 2015 Virginia named 2 songs their state song. The official traditional state song is "Our Great Virginia" and the official popular state song is "Sweet Virginia Breeze". The song emeritus is "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny" this was the official song from 1940-1997. (3)
The state's bird is a Cardinal and it's flower/tree is the dogwood. It's slogan is Virginia is for Lovers. (3)
This is where Virginia is within the United States. This picture accurately reflects where Virginia's boundaries are today, the State boundaries have been the same since 1863.
Virginia's state flag was officially adopted 01 February 1950 and this is what it looks like:
