I don't know why all the other ancestry.com members have his birth year as 1887.  As you will see by the sources I found on him he never reports this as his birth year.




Since these people  have this unsourced birth year and they don't show any documents linking to the parents they named as his parents…I'm not putting to much faith in their data. So I am going to do a search for an 1880 Census for this John with a birth year of 1879 +/-2 in Kentucky, because of the couple of year differences he reports in the known Census records.

I don't have a 1920 Census saved, so I am going to go look for that now.
Sarah Ellen reports in Indiana as Divorced and both James Linville and Anna are reported to be living with her.  So none of them would be with him.

Although this one lists both his parents as living in Kentucky,  I don't think this is it because if he remarried he wouldn't have this old of children with this wife.

Household Members:
This one has both parents as being born in Kentucky, Marital Status is Divorced, and he is living with his mother.  This is a possible, although there is no Josephine listed in the 1880 Census choices.  I will keep on looking.

Both parents reported as born in Kentucky. I don't think if he remarried he would have a 12yr old girl already.  Unless this is the reason him and Sarah Ellen got divorced.  Doubtful but possible.

Again I think this one is doubtful because of the wife and age of the children.

The one out of these that seems the most likely is the divorcee with his Mom in Missouri.  I don't feel confident enough to attach the record to his person in my tree though.

Perhaps he did marry again!  In this 1930 Census where he is living in his hometown with his son, he reports he was widowed.

Here again he is living in his Ohio hometown.  I think he is in some sort of assisted living or senior living place based on the average age of the fellow boarders.  Here he lists himself as divorced again.

He listed Melissa Noble of Marshall ave., Hamilton, Ohio as the person who will always know what his address is. 

So as you can see, he lists his own birth year as 1878, 1879, and 1880.  But never once does he list his birth year as 1887.

As far as his parents go I am going to go with:
Proctor, Lee, Kentucky (where draft card says John was born)
Household Members:
I'm going with this because it's in Lee County, Kentucky which is the same as his WWII draft card says he was born.  Plus on this same card he said Melissa Noble would know where he lived.  This census would explain that.  Maybe his sister's married name was Noble.

Well that's all I have on him right now.  Next up on the ancestry trail is his father, Anderson Roach.
