Norfolk, Virginia
The city of Norfolk is located in the common wealth of Virginia. (2) It was formed as an independent city from Norfolk county in 1845. (1) It is located at the mouth of the Chesapeake bay. (2)
In 1619 the Virginia Colony's Governor, Sir George Yeardley incorporated Elizabeth Cittie, one of four jurisdictions. In 1634 King Charles I reorganized these citties into shires. Elizabeth Cittie then became Elizabeth City Shire. When the South Hampton Roads portion separated from the shire, Adam Thoroughgood (a large land holder) suggested it be renamed New Norfolk County, after his birthplace in England. One year later it was split into Upper Norfolk and Lower Norfolk. Part of what was Lower Norfolk is now the independent city of Norfolk. It was incorporated in 1705 and George II granted it a royal charter as a borough (town or district). All that was left from the Revolutionary War was the walls of Saint Paul's Episcopal Church. (2) The town was gradually rebuilt.
Here is the Seal of Norfolk:
Et Terra Et Mare Diitiae Tuae Crescas is meant to be translated as “Both by land and by sea thy riches (are)" (3)
"Motto: Crescas (Latin for, "Thou shalt grow.")" (2)
